Hawkeye Episode 4 Review

It’s the calm before the storm

Welcome back, y’all! This time around, we’re taking a look at Marvel’s Hawkeye series, episode 4. The season is already almost over! You know, it started off a little rough for me, but the series has been pretty enjoyable so far. I do like the characters, and I do like the story, so hopefully it continues this uptrend. Also! At the time of writing this, I am eagerly waiting to watch Spider-Man; No Way Home later tonight, which is also going to have a review for today, though it will be a lot shorter, considering that I want to avoid all the spoilery stuff. That review should be up later tonight, most likely after the usual 8:30 PM EST time. I’d say you can expect that around 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM, but it’ll definitely be here. Alright, without any further ado, let’s just jump right into it.

Episode 4: Partners, Am I Right?

We start off exactly where we ended up in the last episode. Jack is holding Clint still by holding the Ronin sword to his neck. Kate rushes in telling Jack no, while Eleanor suddenly comes in the room with much surprise, as she notices “an Avenger in my dining room”. We jump to all four characters sitting at the dining table, where Kate explains what exactly brought them back to Eleanor and Jack’s apartment. We get a… pretty cringey scene full of flat jokes and awkward silence, it really wasn’t well written. Eventually, Clint is politely escorted out after he smoothly nabs his sword back and covers it with his jacket. Eleanor stops Clint at the elevator door, reminding him that Kate isn’t a superhero, to which Clint tries to say that Kate is pretty good, but Eleanor bluntly tells him that Natasha Romanoff was pretty good. Yikes. Jumping ahead a bit, Clint calls his wife Laura, who informs him about the whole Sloan LTD company, and kicks up some info on Jack being the CEO. Sloan is indeed a front, and Jack is indeed up to no good. Well, him and “the big guy”. “Big guy”, huh? Iiinteresting. You know, Laura seems to be very experienced in this field, and it makes me wonder if they’re setting her up to be a retired Mockingbird. That would honestly be really cool, it would add so much to her character in my opinion. Any who, back with Kate, we get another slow scene that is just a bunch of filler to get the episode going. You know, I’m not sure what’s up with this episode. Not bad, but it’s very, very slow. Anyways, Clint and Kate eventually meet up again inside her aunt’s apartment, with Kate bringing up some pizza, a build kit for a Christmas tree and Christmas sweaters. We get a pretty nice scene of the two in their Christmas sweaters, just talking about stuff while eating pizza, joking around, things like that. We get to a point where Kate wonders about Ronin’s relation to Hawkeye, but with Clint’s silence, she asks if he’s Ronin. “Everybody dealt with the Blip in their own way.”

Jumping ahead a bit, Clint sends Kate to find his supply of trick arrows which are being held by the LARPers, while Clint goes to find Kazi. Kate finds the LARPers as she walks the dog (Pizza Dog, pretty funny nickname) training with fake weapons in a park. She talks to one of them, a cop, to which the cop agrees only if Kate can do something for her. We’ll find about that later. Back with Clint, he’s casually sitting behind Kazi in the backseat of Kazi’s car, and tells him that Maya’s vengeance needs to end. Clint legitimately tries to reason with Kazi, to which Kazi does subtly agree. A bit later, Clint meets with Kate in the fireman’s house, the LARPer who had the Ronin suit named Grills. In his house, he and a fellow LARPer decides that the Hawkeyes can get their arrows if the LARPers can design their costumes, much to Kate’s (not exactly Hawkeye’s) pleasure. It’s agreed upon, and Clint gets the tricks arrows. Nice. Later on, the Hawkeyes are on top of a rooftop tracking down an item that’s important to Clint, but we don’t yet know why it’s significant. All we know is that it’s someone Clint used to work with, and they’ve been out of the game for a while. It’s a watch that was taken from the Avengers Compound, and was then taken from the auction in episode one. Kate infiltrates the apartment they were scoping and finds the watch, but finds a list of Clint’s family’s names, including their description. Suddenly, Kate hears Clint grunting, and Kate herself is suddenly attacked. Kate and Clint say that Maya’s here, but Clint believes Maya is fighting him on the rooftop, but Kate sees Maya very clearly fighting her in the apartment. During Clint’s fight with his masked assailant, he shoots a grapple line at the apartment for Kate to slide down, but Maya follows her immediately. After a long, well coordinated fight scene, Kate injures Maya with an arrow, making her flee the scene. As Hawkeye fights his assailant, he pulls of their mask, revealing none other than Yelena Belova, Natasha’s sister first seen in Black Widow. She gracefully falls from the rooftop, disappearing. For now. Clint, understanding the danger of having a Black Widow assassin hunting him, cuts off Kate, telling her that her job is done. It’s over. End of episode.

You know, this episode wasn’t exactly bad, but it did feel like a bit of a slip. The jokes were pretty mediocre, and Kate had some pretty bad and annoying dialogue. She felt too arrogant too often, and that wasn’t enjoyable to watch. I like the character a lot, so I hope that this isn’t how she’ll be from here on. Not a great entry, but not bad either.

Final Thoughts

Well there it is, y’all. Episode four definitely had its ups and downs, but I did manage to enjoy it regardless. Again, Kate was kiiinda bad in this episode, but she wasn’t horrible, if that makes sense. It was slow, but even still, I did have an alright time with this one. But what did you all think?
