Let there be… a review!

Welcome back, y’all! This time around, we’re taking a look at the brand new Venom: Let There Be Carnage! Now, there will be absolutely no spoilers here. Just a nice and short review of a brand new movie. I’ll have a section for the pros, a section for the cons, and a final section for my final thoughts, along with my final rating. Now, without any further ado, let’s just jump right into it.

PROS

Let’s start the first pro with the fact that this movie doesn’t do anything overkill. Meaning, this movie feels like the first film, while having its own unique flavor. In fact, I’d say this sequel is better than the first film. The dynamic between Eddie Brock and Venom, which I consider to be another pro, is even better this time around. The humor surrounding them is almost always well executed, and I especially love their banter. Though, they’re definitely a lot closer in this movie than the last. They’ve clearly had time to bond, and we also get to see that bond get stronger and stronger as the movie goes on, so that was really nice to see. Not even just Eddie and Venom, but also Cletus Kasady and our new angry symbiote, Carnage. It was really fun to see them both just immediately get to wreaking havoc the moment they’re bonded with one another. I love the way they carry themselves, and I love the absolute intensity that they bring when they step into a scene. Cletus alone is super creepy, and pretty damn scary, but Carnage? Man, he killed it… along with killing a bunch of other things, but we’re not talking about that. This live action Carnage was absolutely fantastic. He’s wild, he’s vicious, he’s dangerous, he’s absolute Carnage. Now, we have the character of Shriek. Honestly, I don’t have much to say about her. I think that the actress, Naomie Harris, played the part wonderfully, so definitely, I’d say it was a job well done. I’ll explain my feelings about Shriek in the cons section. In terms of story, it was actually pretty good. Of course, Carnage is the overarching villain, so of course the plot is that Venom and Eddie needs to take him and Cletus down, but the story also deeply involves the character development of both Eddie and Venom. This ties back into what I said before, which was the dynamic that the two characters share. That same dynamic is strengthened and challenged, and we see them both bonding more and more over the course of this movie because of these strengtheners and challenges. I had a pretty great time with all of these things, but I had an AMAZING time with the mid credits scene. I can’t spoil it, but you’ll be super hyped up when you watch this film yourselves. Now, on to cons.

Cons

Piggybacking off of what I said about Shriek, I do have a bit of an issue with her. Honestly, she really didn’t need to be here. I understand it was to extend the run time and to give the film another character to play with, but really, the character wasn’t that important. She felt crammed in at times, and really had no business being here. This is no disrespect to the actress, as it’s not her fault. Even in the comics, I don’t find Shriek to really be necessary. She’s the love interest of Cletus, but there’s absolutely no compatibility. It’s just a weird, forced bond just for the sake of the story. Speaking of Cletus, I really wish we got more of him and Carnage. I was pumped every time I saw them, but they were taken away from us way too soon. I understand that it was because the run time was pretty short, and it probably would’ve negatively impacted the film if they forced it to be longer, but I just really wish that we got more of the two. Besides my issues with Shriek, Cletus and Carnage, I think the third and final con is the humor. It’s really forced on you. Don’t get me wrong, Venom and Eddie were great together, but when the humor came from an outside force like other characters or something happening around them (like the party scene), I was kinda just sitting there bored out of my mind, wanting the scene to just move on.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, I had a very good time with this movie. It had some great action, Venom and Eddie were wonderful together, and Cletus and Carnage were absolute badasses. Shriek sucked and the humor was lacking, but I enjoyed the story very much, even with those two issues. I did mention a mid credits scene before, and I beg you, please stick around for it. Not only is it amazing, but it’s extremely important for the characters of Eddie and Venom. There’s nothing after the credits, so you can walk out after, but this scene is an absolute MUST for you all to watch. But if any of you watched this movie, what did you think?
