The Bad Batch Season 2 Episode 5
It’s a Pirate’s Life For Me!
Welcome back, y’all! This time around, we’re taking a look at Star Wars: The Bad Batch, season 2 episode 5! Now, I know the review before this was a bit of a bummer, but look, I gotta be honest about the way I feel about these projects, no matter how beloved they are. If it’s slacking, I’ll call it out. If it’s fantastic, I’ll praise it. I’m not going to have you all think that something is good, knowing full and well that I find it to be flawed. Some of you have never seen some of the things I’ve written about, and have given them a chance after reading my review on it, which I appreciate, because it means that I’m having an impact on you. That being the case, I don’t want to lie and have any of you watch something if I myself don’t enjoy watching it. Do I enjoy this series, yes, very much, but it needs to pick up the pace. Thankfully, this episode does better. So, let’s talk about it, no more rambling. Without any further ado, let’s jump right into it.
Episode 5: Entombed
We start the episode with Omega and Wrecker, sifting through a junkyard looking for some a spare part, specifically a compressor, likely to sell, or maybe to make some adjustments to the Marauder. They climb their way into a wrecked ship, where they find the part and a few other items of interest. We cut to Cid’s cantina, where we see the pirate Phee telling a tall tale about an adventure she had to the comedic duo, Bolo and Ketch. They’re not the brightest, so they’ll believe anything Phee tells them. As the story wraps up, Wrecker and Omega come back and dump all of their findings on a table in front of Phee. As they look through the items, Phee notices an interesting looking device, one with coordinates etched into it. She has her funny little droid, Mel, scan the item, who confirms that it is in fact a compass. After finding out the location the coordinates lead to, it’s said that there’s a hidden treasure in a system called Kaldar Trinary, a system Tech himself can’t pinpoint. As with all classic pirate adventures, Phee and the Batch have to make their way to an ancient area to find a mysterious treasure. After a bit of a debate, they all eventually head out and make their way to the system on board the Marauder. They land on their desolate planet of interest, which shows absolutely zero sign of life. Confirming they’re in the right area, the compass activates, making an interesting beeping sound, where Echo translates it as the compass telling them to go south. The crew make their way to the side of a mountain, which causes the beeping from the compass to intensify, before shutting off, indicating they’ve reached their destination. After a bit of probing, Phee has Wrecker lift a massive rock on the side of the mountain, causing a small avalanche that reveals a hidden entrance. Upon entering, they’re immediately faced with a puzzle, one that requires them to move around small pillars attached to rotating rings that make up the walls around them. Phee and Wrecker move a few around, thinking they’ve solved it, until the room moves around them, sealing them within, and they’re all forced to dive out of the way as a massive boulder falls from above. As Omega examines the compass, she realizes that it reveals the right order of the puzzle. The team rearranges the pillars, correcting the order of them, causing the room to spin once again, this time revealing the way ahead.
Jumping ahead a bit, because the entire episode truly is just a lot of puzzle work and danger, we see the crew split up after a bunch of debris divides them into two groups: Tech, Echo and Wrecker have to find their way around and regroup with the others, while Hunter, Omega and Phee have no choice but to venture on and find the treasure. Hunter leads the way into this interesting looking tunnel with interesting runes above them. As Hunter continues, Phee realizes that the journey is a little too easy, and almost immediately, the ground beneath Hunter gives way. He quickly throws his grappling hook to Phee, who catches it with Omega and pulls him back up. Noticing a slot in the wall, Omega inserts the compass into it, causing the tunnel to spin around in a complete 180, allowing them to safely continue traveling. After a bit of journeying, they reach a vault door, and are later met by the rest of the crew who had a bit of exploring to do themselves. They open the door, and when they look inside, they notice a glowing stone, the target treasure, called the Heart of the Mountain. Phee removes the stone, and upon doing so, the entire room begins to rumble. The rumbling gets more and more violent, and the room begins to flip over on its side. We see a view of the mountain, seeing the tip of it explode, and from within, we see a massive, ancient, robotic creature standing on four legs emerge from the mountain. It moves slowly, with each step causing a big boom below its feet. The creature fires a blue laser beam from its mouth, aiming at the poor droid Mel, who runs from the chaos. Suddenly, a large creatures climbs inside the robot’s head and attacks the Batch. The crew struggles against the creature as Phee tries to find the stone again, as it was knocked away during the attack. The massive robot fires its beam aimlessly, causing chaos, when it sees the Marauder in the distance. Back in its head, we see Wrecker grab hold of the creature’s tail and toss it out of the robot’s eye, plummeting to its demise. Phee returns with the stone and tosses it to Tech, who inserts it back into its original spot, deactivating the creature before it can destroy the Marauder. The stone melts as the creature plummets back down, finally destroyed after all of the chaos. The crew makes it back out safely, and heads back to the Marauder, where Phee is ready to travel to yet another area for more adventuring. End of episode.
I actually liked this episode. It didn’t make much progress, in terms of really moving the show along, but that’s honestly okay this time. We got a pretty cool adventure, we got to spend more time with the new character Phee, and I enjoyed the pirate adventure that we see in other shows and movies. It was simple, nothing too out of the ordinary, while also showing us a cool ancient robot. That’s pretty cool to me, not bad at all actually.
Final Thoughts
As I said before, I’m actually pretty satisfied. I enjoyed the puzzles, the mystery dungeon feeling, the cool robot, and I enjoyed Phee. Maybe it’s the Zelda fan in me that made me enjoy this episode so much, I’m not sure, but when it comes to random missions and/or adventures, I prefer them to be high stakes like this one. I really enjoy seeing these characters being put to the test, and it doesn’t have to be all the time or anything like that, but at least every other episode, with some cool, Imperial stuff going on in between.
