So it is coming out… right?

Welcome back, y’all! This time around, we’re gonna be talking about the upcoming LEGO game, LEGO Star Wars; The Skywalker Saga. What a rocky road it’s been for this game. After it was announced, there was really no marketing or hype building for the game. Eventually, at Gamescom 2020, it was confirmed that the game would be pushed back to 2021. After all of that, it had us as Star Wars and LEGO games fans worried that the game would be shelved. Well, after the recent announcement that it’ll be presented at this year’s Gamescom, I put together a little list of things we know about the game, things we can assume, and then of course, our final thoughts. Without any further ado, let’s just jump right into it.

What we know

The first thing to bring up in this category, is what the game will be based on. As stated in the title of the game itself, we know it’ll be about the Skywalker Saga, which stretches throughout three trilogies. What’s interesting about this game, is that you can actually play any episode from the Star Wars movies in any order. That means if you decide to start off with the Sequel Trilogy, and then decide to jump into the Prequel Trilogy, you can do that. Maybe you feel like starting off with Revenge of the Sith, but then you want to go all the way to Empire Strikes Back, then you can totally do that. What’s really interesting, is that it’s confirmed that you can actually play as characters from The Mandalorian, and even fly the Razor Crest if you use a code that comes with the official LEGO set for that vehicle. This would be treated as DLC, and we do know that there’s going to be a deluxe edition, which will include all of that Mando goodness for a higher price. Not only this, but we’re also going to be getting DLC from Rogue One, and even from The Bad Batch. These are going to be character DLC packs, so I doubt we’ll get any levels for those installments, but never say never. It’s confirmed that we’ll actually be receiving six character packs, and we only know about these three, so I really do wonder what the other three will be. We’ll talk about that in the next section. So, while we will be receiving all of these character packs, we’ll only be playing in locations from the three trilogies. Bummer, but that could always change.

The next thing we know is that, as mentioned before, this game will in fact be present at Gamescom 2021. We even know that this game will be one of the opening games to feature, so thankfully we won’t have to wait too long to get some good footage, news, and confirmations. Considering how this game is still slated to be a 2021 release, we think it’s safe to expect a release date after we get some gameplay. That probably belongs in the next section, but it really only makes sense, considering how there’s not too many months left in 2021. We’re gonna have a lot of time with this game at Gamescom, and we can say that since they usually give quite a bit of time for big titles to shine, so expect gameplay and expect some new character reveals. One thing that’s important to bring up, is that this game is going to launch with a whopping 300 plus characters, not even including the DLC character packs. Since, as I’ve already noted, there are going to be six character packs, expect that number to get a lot closer to 400. From what we’ve seen from the trailers and gameplay reveal back in 2020, it seems that this game is going to have some really interesting gameplay mechanics. For example, it seems like when you play as a blaster wielding character, you’ll actually be able to zoom in the way you would in a third person shooter. For lightsaber wielding characters, it looks like you’ll be able to engage in struggles/lightsaber clashes, which is really great to see. I’m not sure if this is only possible during certain sections of the story, or if you can engage in these struggles when fighting your friend, but either way, that’s really cool. Also, with the confirmation of the Razor Crest, you can safely expect to see space battles or maybe even some genuine space exploration. We don’t know exactly how space travel will work here, so we’ll have to wait and see for that. Unfortunately, that’s all we know currently, but Gamescom 2021 will give us a bit more to chew on. Let’s head over to the next section, where we start to theorize.

What We think

As stated above, there’s really not a whole lot to talk about, but from what we know, I’m thinking there’s a few things that’ll pop up in-game that they haven’t confirmed just yet. The first thing I’m thinking, is that they’ll involve The Clone Wars in the story for this game. I know it’s called The Skywalker Saga, but the Clone Wars era is extremely important to the story of Star Wars, and I’m sure that’s not something they would want to exclude out of the story. What I would say, is that we likely won’t have a whole lot to play when it comes to The Clone Wars, but I’m almost positive we’ll see the battles of Christophsis, Ryloth, Naboo, and Mandalore, just to name a few. It would be crazy not to include characters like Ahsoka, Asajj Ventress, Bo Katan, etc etc, just because they weren’t in the films. If this era isn’t included into the story, then you can definitely expect to see a DLC pack that would include these characters, but fans really wouldn’t like that at all, and I think they know that. On the topic of animated shows, I’m also thinking that we’ll see the inclusion of Rebels. There’s two reasons I think this. Number one is because Rebels is a pretty important piece of Original Trilogy content. Number two, is because of Thrawn. In The Mandalorian season two, we see Ahsoka explicitly name drop him, which was a hint at his involvement for the future of the Mando-verse. For such an important character like Thrawn to be included into the future of Star Wars, I’m positive that they would want to involve his first canon appearance into the LEGO games, starting with this one.

So, we know of three DLC character packs, but we still don’t yet know what the other three will be. Well, here’s how I’m looking at it. We’ve got The Mandalorian coming first, or at least alongside Rogue One. I personally believe the first pack will only be representing the first season of The Mandalorian, leaving space for the second season to be represented in the fourth pack, or maybe even the third, if they decide that The Bad Batch can wait. For the next pack, I think it’s safe to assume that this will be for The Book of Boba Fett, since that series will be dropping before this year is over. Boba Fett himself could be released as a brand new character, since he’s treated as an anti-hero nowadays instead of a villain. We’ve got characters like Fennec Shand, fat Bib Fortuna, and all the other new characters we’re bound to see. The last pack is probably a stretch, but I’m thinking this could be for either the second season of The Bad Batch, the upcoming Andor series, or the Kenobi series. It really does depend on what releases first, so we’re just gonna have to wait and see about that. Based on what we’ve heard about the Andor and Kenobi series, I’m thinking it’ll probably be for Kenobi, since we’ve heard rumors about that series finishing its filming first. But really, it’s anyone’s guess.

The final thing I’m thinking, is that this game may very well be treated as a live game. This means that they would continue to support the game by adding on new content every once in a while. I think this is very likely, since there’s going to be a lot more Star Wars content this year, next year, and plenty of the years to come. I can’t say for sure if all of them would be DLC story packs, or just DLC character packs, but I still do think it’s very likely that the six DLC packs won’t be the last we see for this game.

Final Thoughts

I have to admit, I’ve been pretty worried about this game. We haven’t been hearing much about it, of course we know it was delayed (which is almost never a good sign), and it almost seemed as if it was going to get delayed yet again. I’m extremely traumatized from Cyberpunk 2077 with all of its delays, and I’m sure you all understand why. But thankfully, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is back on the horizon, and hopefully it’ll be as good as we all expect. But what do you all think?
