Here’s What The Book of Boba Fett Means For Star Wars
What’s Boba Got to do with Anything?
Welcome back to The Wolf Den! This time around, we’re having another discussion, this time being centered around the upcoming The Book of Boba Fett. Star Wars fans all over have been craving some live action goodies since The Mandalorian Season 2 wrapped up quite a few months ago, but we got a little Boba series sneak peek at the end credits scene of that series to pump us up. While we do have The Bad Batch to hold us over, nothing is as exciting as seeing the iconic Boba Fett back on screen. That alone is significant, but it may also spell some even more good news for fans of the Original Trilogy. Let me explain how.
FirstlY, Why do we need a Boba Series?
Whether you’re reading because you’re a Boba Fett fan or not, this is still relevant to all of you. So, with a character like Boba Fett, we all need to realize that back in the day when the first 3 Star Wars films were released, Boba was just meant to be a cool looking background character. He barely had any lines and he barely did anything. All he really did was capture Han Solo, speak to Darth Vader, and stand in the background. Nonetheless, this was more than enough for his character to gain a pretty substantial following. The fact that he looked cool was plenty for all kinds of fans to take a heavy liking to the character, even after he “died” a super lame death. Why would anyone bring a character like that back, you might be saying? Well, Star Wars is a majorly successful franchise, and it sells toys, shirts, and other collectibles of all kinds of characters, even the ones you only see for 3 or 4 seconds. Boba Fett, even back then, was a pretty big selling point. Taking a look at that character nowadays, and sales surrounding this guy have absolutely skyrocketed. With his amazing return in The Mandalorian, of course he was going to get his own series. Toys, shirts, posters, and really anything else you can think of are already selling just as well, so with a series of his own, it’s basically guaranteed that Disney and Lucasfilm are going to be getting some pretty substantial checks.
But money aside, what else is so important about bring this guy back for more? His reputation. Fans like what they like. There are fans who love the big characters like Yoda, Chewbacca, Emperor Palpatine, General Grievous, so on and so on, but then there’s fans of the super minor and, might I dare say, the super insignificant characters that just lounge around the cantinas with drinks in their hands. Boba Fett has always been a character that’s loved simply because he looks cool. Now, before Disney, the Star Wars franchise was actually expanded upon beyond the Original Trilogy, but in the form of games, books, and comics. One character who was HEAVILY worked on, was Boba. He came back from the dead to get vengeance on Han Solo, became leader of the Mandalorian people, and he even had a daughter. The character was in a very good place, and things were looking up for him. He even almost had his own game called Star Wars 1313. Unfortunately, when Disney took acquisition over Lucasfilm, all content created after the Original Trilogy was essentially made non-existent. All that good work put into Boba’s character was now turned into dust, and Boba was back in the Sarlacc Pit. It would be years later in the good old Mandalorian series, that we’d finally see our boy Boba back in action. The character’s legacy is important, and Fett fans have been dying to see the guy back in action for way too long. With this series, we get to see all the badassery that we’d expect from the legendary bounty hunter. Think about it like this. Imagine if the Prequel Trilogy was erased. That would take away such a huge and important chunk of lore away from characters like Obi-Wan and Yoda, essentially just keeping them as the old space wizards that we know and love of course, but it would take away that warrior aspect that we found to be so cool. That level of thinking applies to Boba Fett. We got so much good content in the books and comics, and it got taken away. With The Book of Boba Fett, we finally get to see him done right. Hopefully.
So we’ve established the fact that Disney wants to make money while also respecting the character’s legacy and reputation. End of article? Not exactly. There’s something else I want to dedicate your time to. I want to explain what the Boba Fett series does for other minor characters. Think of the bounty hunters we saw in the background of the Original Trilogy. Think of the band we saw in the Mos Eisley cantina in Star Wars: A New Hope. These are characters that people LOVE, and these are characters that people want to see more of. But, so what? Here’s what I’m getting at.
The Boba Series Opens A Door For The Lesser Known Characters
I know that sounds a little bit odd, but hear me out. In the current times of Star Wars, we have a bunch of comics centered around the usual rebels like Luke, Leia, R2, C-3PO, Han, and Chewie, we have Darth Vader comics, we have a bounty hunter comics series with some original bounty hunters being introduced, etc etc. What does this matter to something like Disney+ or even your nearest movie theater? Well, the fact that Disney’s eyeing characters like Boba Fett alone proves that they clearly want as much content as possible. Disagree with me? Let me explain myself. Cassian Andor, a rebel introduced AND last seen in Rogue One, only had that one movie to make an impact. Don’t get me wrong, he was great, but he clearly isn’t majorly important to the FRANCHISE of Star Wars (Not the plot, because he definitely is). Even with that little amount of screen time, he’s still getting his own Disney+ series called Andor. Lando Calrissian. A beloved character from the Original Trilogy, but he’s no Luke or Leia. Even he’s getting his own series, Lando. Hey, even R2 and C-3PO are getting their own series in the form of Droids, coming later down the line. See where I’m getting at? They want to pump out as much Star Wars as possible nowadays. All these cool new bounty hunters that are thriving in the comics now have a really solid opportunity to make it to the big screen. All these cool background aliens from the old movies can pop up yet again, just like they did with the two cantina aliens from A New Hope, who they brought back in Rogue One for one quick scene. Now that I’ve explained my personal reasoning on WHY the background fan favorites have a chance, let me explain WHO might have their chance. Might.
First of all, with the Boba Fett series, we’re absolutely gonna see some Original Trilogy bounty hunters popping up. There’s not a doubt in my mind that we’ll see characters like Bossk and/or Dengar. I personally think Bossk is 100% coming, but Dengar seems a little less likely. One thing that I can see happening in the Boba series is a flashback that brings us back to the Original Trilogy just to see all of those old school bounty hunters at least once more. A stretch, but I think it’s likely. I’m thinking we’ll definitely see the Mos Eisley cantina band one more time, but probably not in the Boba series. It’d be more likely to have them in the Lando or the Kenobi series. I also think that one way or another, we’re going to see one of the newest Star Wars characters introduced in the comics, Doctor Aphra. I’m personally not a fan of the character, but I know a lot of people are, so I’d be happy to see her as long as the way she’s written is good. Another character I think we’ll be seeing one last time, is Ahsoka’s old friend, Barriss Offee. We’ve only seen her in the Clone Wars series, and she hasn’t been seen since. I think that Dave Filoni, creator of The Clone Wars and the co-creator of The Mandalorian, knows this, as he’s very well versed in the Star Wars franchise. I mean, he did create Barriss, so it’d be hard for him not to see how badly people want her back. I personally think we’ll see her in the flesh in the Ahsoka series, just to give Ahsoka some emotional character development. One last character I think we’ll definitely see in live action, is Cad Bane. He’s not necessarily a lesser character, but he definitely isn’t as known as someone like Boba or Chewbacca. I think the best and most likely way we’d see this badass bounty hunter is in the Boba series, just so we can see him have his finally gun showdown against Boba, giving Bane a proper sendoff.
Final Thoughts
All I know for sure, is that Star Wars fans young and old will definitely have something to look forward to. Boba Fett truly is an amazing character, and he’s actually my personal favorite Star Wars character believe it or not. I’m so very excited for when his series drops in December, and I really hope we see at least 1 or 2 of the characters I listed above. I wish the best of luck to all of these characters, and I hope they’re written in the best way possible. But what do you guys think?
