So, two archers walk into a bar…

Welcome back, y’all! This time around, we’re diving back into Marvel’s Hawkeye series. More specifically, the second episode for it. So far, it’s pretty okay, but let’s see just how good the series gets as these episodes go on. Not much to say, other than I’m actually very interested in the series, because I do see some potential, so hopefully my hopes for it come true. Now, without any further ado, let’s just jump right into it.

Episode 2: Hide and Seek

Starting right from where we ended in the last episode, we see Clint question Kate on her involvement with the Ronin suit, while Kate tries to control herself from fangirling, Clint gathers her stuff and puts a jacket over her and the suit, taking her back to her home. After finally getting to her place, Kate properly introduces herself, and Clint meets the one-eyed doggie do. Yes, “doggie do.” Anyways, as they discuss how Kate came into possession of the suit, we hear one of the Russian mobsters (the Tracksuit Gang, by the way) shout out Kate’s full name, and a molotov cocktail crashes through her window, setting her place on fire. After an intense altercation, Clint and Kate escape the fire with the dog, leaving the suit behind. Clint and Kate make a quick supply run to a pharmacy, getting some medical supplies, and they head over to Kate’s aunt’s apartment, a temporary safe place since her aunt’s out of town. Clint makes Kate stay behind to clean up her wounds, while he heads back to her apartment to get the suit. Upon his arrival, he sees curious civilians, a few firetrucks and firemen, and police tape. He blends in with the crowd to smoothly make his way to a nearby, unattended firetruck, to steal a uniform and blend in with the other firemen to enter the building. After finally getting to her apartment, he finds that the suit isn’t there anymore, it’s been taken. Disappointed, he heads back down to return the uniform. After changing, he looks up to see a LARPing group sticker on the side of the firetruck. He heads back to Kate, who’s checking in with her mom on the phone. After the call ends, he tells her about the suit, but he believes he might know where to look. He looks up the “NYC Larpers” on Instagram, where he finds a reel of a man dressed in the Ronin suit, showing it off as a new costume. I mean, sure. I guess. He also looks up @theofficialwolfden and follows the account and starts liking and saving all of his posts, like you all should. That was a shameless plug, and I have no regrets about it.

Anyways! Jumping ahead a bit, we see Clint and Kate watching the news, where it’s announced that Armand (the same Armand from last episode) was murdered in his own home. After this, we see a picture of Ronin, or Kate dressed as Ronin, with the reporter wondering if it means that Ronin is officially back, and if he’s responsible for Armand Ducane’s death. A bit after this, Clint walks Kate back to her mother’s building, where they exchange numbers for emergencies only. After this, Clint goes ahead and attends the NYC Larpers event, where he spots the fake Ronin, but is stopped by a woman dressed in some sort of Viking armor. He’s forced to sign up as a LARPer, and puts on a funny, basic suit of armor and wields a funny play sword. There’s a long scene in slow mo of him “fighting” Vikings, easily evading and attacking them with an “over it” look on his face. He finally gets to the fake Ronin, who asks Clint to let him kill Clint so he can feel like a hero. It’s actually kinda sweet, even if it is corny. They have to have a “trial by combat” to make it look real enough. Back over to Kate, she gets a call from a Detective Caudle of the NYPD, who questions her heavily on her whereabouts during the house fire. She of course deflects, and they schedule a meeting for the next day. Back to Clint, he has a drawn out pretend fight with the firefighter, who does indeed wins after Clint lets him, and the crowd cheers him on. Afterwards, Clint patiently waits, and the firefighter eventually comes and brings back the suit, and thanks Clint for being a hero, and letting him feel like a hero. Jumping ahead, Kate, Eleanor, and Jack have an awkward dinner together, where Kate essentially interrogates Jack. This eventually leads to a fencing match between the two, where she believes that if she spars enough with him, it’ll reveal his true capabilities as a swordsman, making him the prime suspect of Armand’s murder. During the fight, she tries to stab his face when he looks away, and he actually parries it, proving her point. Yikes. Finally, back over to Clint, he decides to allow himself to get captured by the Tracksuit Mafia, to clear Kate of her ties to Ronin. Kate, however, manages to track Clint and decides to rescue him, but fails immensely and gets captured herself. Before the episode ends, we see who’s in command of the gang, which is none other than the character of Maya Lopez, otherwise known as Echo. She’s a character with ties to both Daredevil and Kingpin, so… maybe, just maybe? Let’s wait and find out!

This episode was actually better than the first one. A bit corny, but it was more manageable this time around. Way better dialog for sure, better jokes, and overall, a better time than before. I’m starting to see an immediate improvement, and that’s getting me pretty excited, actually. Not bad, y’all, not bad.

Final Thoughts

Well, I gotta say, they’re already doing better. And look, I know that in the comics, this is how silly it was when it came down to the dynamic of Kate and Clint, and I know the Tracksuits are pretty silly in the comics too. It just comes to a point when things get a little too goofy. You need to understand, there has to be some element of realism, otherwise it just turns things into a kids program. With this episode though, I can absolutely recognize the improvements. So really, I gotta say “good job”, because I legitimately cringed a little with the pilot. But what did you all think? 4 out of 5.
