5 Things to Know Before Seeing Venom: Let There Be Carnage
Whether you’re a Marvel fanatic or a DC enthusiast, here are the 5 bare minimum things you should know before watching the film.
Number 1: Know Who Carnage Is
You will look absolutely ridiculous to even the most average Marvel fan, if you don't even know who Carnage is. Thankfully, I'm here to bring you up to speed, so grab a notepad and pencil. Carnage is a parasitic fictional comic book character created by Marvel, who also happens to be the child of his more famous father, Venom. Carnage was born during a prison break in an institution called "Ravencroft Institute", where he would find a serial killer named Cletus Kasady and make him his host. The bonding of the two was a horrible one, as their togetherness only made them much more insane and bloodthirsty, making Carnage a veeery bad egg.
Number 2: Did you at least watch the first Venom movie?
I mean, why are you even watching this one if you haven't even watched the first one!? While I won't give a super in depth review on a movie that came out almost 3 years ago, I can say that it was a pretty fun watch, even though it does have a few moments that make the film a little corny with its sometimes bland writing. Overall, it puts the character of Venom and his host, Eddie Brock, in the spotlight together pretty well. If you're wondering how the characters of both Carnage and Cletus Kasady tie into the second iteration, then spoiler alert...
Like all Marvel movies (even though this is a Sony film with no relation to the Marvel Cinematic Universe), there is a post credits scene that does in fact show us Cletus Kasady in live action for the very first time, which brings me to my third point.
Number 3: Be prepared to sit through some credits.
Like I said before, Marvel movies almost always have end credits scenes. There could even be a mid credits scene, you just need to sit and find out for yourself... or spoil that kind of fun by being impatient and searching up what the scene is at the end of the credits if there even is one, but where's the fun in that? For this movie, just be cautious and make sure you chill out and kick your feet up for a few minutes as a safety precaution. I mean hey, me personally? I like to use that time to break down what me and my friends just saw and how it could potentially tie into the sequel. Just, please, if you're gonna wait in a theater, please don't be that one person to leave behind your snacks on the floor. Overpriced snack prices is not a good enough excuse to be lazy!
Number 4: If you're an MCU fan, don't expect any crossovers.
I'll admit it. Even I tend to ride the speculation train. It's fun, but boy can it be disappointing at the end if you don't play your cards right. Since the end of the first Venom movie, folks in the comic book movie community have speculated long for a potential appearance of actor Tom Holland's Spider-Man. While I'm sure most people would love something as fantastic as that, I'm afraid to say that you can throw that idea out of your hopes and dreams. Director of the film, Andy Serkis, has essentially shot that theory down, saying this:
"Obviously, there are links between Venom and the Spider-Man story. We're treating this very much as it's his own world. There are nods and little moments of course, but on the whole, he's unaware."
Eagle-eyed fans might have noticed in the trailer for the film a newspaper belonging to the fictional news outlet, The Daily Bugle, a place Peter Parker has often worked as a photojournalist. Another part of the trailer shows a tiny spider being sentenced to a sudden death sentence with a hand slamming down on it from above. Poor little guy. These two little easter eggs alone were enough to send fans into a frenzy, before of course being quieted by Mr. Serkis. Spider-Man, my precious...
Number 5: There's always room for a third!
While it's not 100% confirmed by Sony, one would assume that of course there's going to at least be one more Venom movie. Though, without concrete evidence supporting this claim, it's hard to really say "This is what's gonna happen", or even "Here's what might happen", because in reality, nobody knows. Even an end credits scene for this movie doesn't exactly confirm anything. While one can only assume, I have to caution any and everyone to just be patient and not to get your hopes up... though I don't see the problem with a little speculation!
Venom: Let There Be Carnage brings a new symbiote for Venom and Eddie Brock to face off against, which happens to be a reused element in the "Venom-Verse". They've fought symbiotes not just once, but twice, so why not a third time? There's plenty of other symbiotes in the Marvel Universe. For example, there's Anti-Venom, Toxin, Scream, Lasher, Agony, etcetera etcetera. While highly unlikely, there's potential for even the God of Symbiotes, Knull himself to appear, though they might save someone this powerful and dangerous for a fourth, maybe even a fifth movie.
Now, with all of that info, you'll be ready and up to speed when Venom: Let There Be Carnage releases on September 24th, 2021.
